Sat 6th June - Great Budworth v King Richard's
This annual fixture celebrates the life of Richard Williams who sadly passed away in 2010 and also raises funds for St.Lukes Hospice in Winsford
Since its inception in 2011 this event has raised approximately £3000 for this most worthy of causes.
Great Budworth CC were founded in 2006 when the local vicar Alex Brown helped organise two matches. The club now has in excess of 80 members and during the coming season will fulfil 24 fixtures against an impressive array of opponents.
Home games are played in the grounds of Arley Hall, where the cricket ground had fallen into dereliction following the demise of Arley CC during the 1980s. The current excellent condition of the ground is testament to the hard work and resolute enthusiasm of a dedicated committee chaired by Peter McAndrew, who also fills the role of groundsman.
All of this is quite remarkable given that it has taken place against a backdrop of a sport in seemingly terminal decline. Having played for Paddington Bears at Arley as long ago as 1984 it is heartwarming to see the ground once again in such good order.
I was first alerted to the existence of this remarkable club during a visit to Great Budworth Ice Cream Farm and Tea Rooms, during which I had a serendipitous conversation with Richard's daughter Suese. Her partner Mark Hankey is Club Captain and during subsequent visits I have been priviliged to learn more about the activities of the club, the loss of her Dad and the fixture played in his memory.
On behalf of our Club I would like to extend the warmest of good wishes to everyone connected with Great Budworth CC, and especially to Suese, her partner Mark, her mum Paula and brother Graham.
We trust that the weather is kind to you and that you have the very best of days.
